He felt the same way and for a few weeks we dated, spending every possible moment together getting to know each other. First, it was great to realise that not all Indian men are afraid to be with a white, divorced women for fear of what their parents will say. The second thing that happened really took me by surprise. I am used to being stared at simply because I look different and stand out here in India. I never take it negatively because everyone takes a peek just out of curiosity. From cute groups of nuns-in-training power walking around Richards Park in their sweet pink sarees, to little girls who wave as they pass by me, to uni students or power women and, of course, most Indian men who spot me. Normally it never bothers me at all but this time it did. Then she proceeded to point, bring in what looked like her sister into the gossip-fest … they pointed, laughed. She stared with a look of disgust at me and continued to gossip to each family member as they filed by, pointing and judging us. After a spell, I stared hard right back, waved to them though I had considered flipping her the bird, I did decide to take a classier approach to the situation.

This was already being done albeit inexpertly see here and dishonestly see here by Leslie Gunawardana, perhaps the best known ancient period historian at that time. In my view, the most incisive comment to be directed against Gunawardana came from Michael Roberts [vi] full text. O, it had nevertheless the refreshing ring of a child asking why the emperor was naked.
But we can reconstruct an answer based on his two essays. After all I am a legitimate scholar and a credentialed historian, and it would never occur to my target reader who are wide eyed, credulous and idealistic, cf. My intended reader Michael was never meant to find out that Buddhaghosa referred not only to Sihaladipa but also to Sihala Bhasa in a way that conflated the island Sihaladipa , islanders dipavasin and the language Sihala Bhasa in a very suggestive way.
In fact Michael, you, yourself would never have found this out if not for K. Buddhaghosa the famous Indian scholar who translated the Sinhala commentaries to Pali refers to the Sihaladipa as well as the Sihalabhasa. Those trusting souls would never bother to compare our sources. If they had, they might have realized the limitations of my familiarity with Buddhaghosa. I source fn 8 [ix] the reference to Sihaladipa and the original commentaries being in the language of Sihaladipa to Samanthapasadika.

Train leaving south from Bambalapitiya Train leaving south from Bambalapitiya Galle Road, Bambalapitiya Colombo-4 View Larger Map of Bambalapitiya Bambalapitiya, affectionately known to all its residents, and even those living within the other zones of Colombo, as"Bamba" is a small town located on both sides of the Galle Road between Colpetty Colombo 3 on the North and Wellawatte Colombo 6 on the South, spanning about one and a half kilometers of the Galle Road.
Bambalapitiya is also classified as Colombo on the zonal map of Colombo and lies within the Municipality of Colombo. Bambalapitiya in the early 19th century was a thick jungle infested with venomous snakes. Kadju Pulang trees were common to this area and it was the belief that outlaws hiding in this dense jungle would hijack and plunder bullock carts carrying produce between Galle and Colombo, It appears that these bandits would murder these traders and hang the bodies on the Kadju Pulung trees.
The song sung at school matches,"we will hang all the Thomians on the Kadju Pulang trees …" is said to have had derived from this legend. The descendants of this family, Haig, Brian and Shelah still live in their ancestral home down Mary"s Road. Galle Road Galle Road begins at Galle Face, somewhere at the roundabout, in front of the old Parliament building at the entrance to the Fort, and stretches its tired asphalt tracks all the way to the town of Galle, almost km down south hugging the coastline like a leech all the way through.
It takes two lanes of traffic, one up and one down, driving anyone standing in the middle to cross into madness and jitters until the person gets safely across to the other side. Since of late the section within the District of Colombo has been divided in the middle by an island, thereby, preventing those crazy over-takers from displaying their antics on the middle of the highway.
At Bambalapitiya, similar to many of the other towns along Galle Road in Colombo, parallel streets, commonly referred to as lanes interspaced by a few blocks of land and residential houses, ran down to the beach from the Galle Road. Here they met the southern railway tracks and beyond it a myriad spread of coconut trees that ringed the white sands of the beautiful beach that curved all the way south like a mermaids bottom.
Galle Road, Kollupitiya Kollupitiya: Each of its zones resembled a mini village, consisting of cinnamon or coconut plantations through which narrow cart roads ran. In colonial times, Mutuwal, Hultsdorp, Grandpass, the Pettah and Fort, in Colombo, were the main urban residencies and business areas where leading citizens lived, loved and traded.

Colombo is apparently derived from Sinhala name Kola-amba-thota which means"Harbour with leafy mango trees". It has been pointed out by Illustrious Julius de Lanerolle Sri Lankan , in an article in the Journal of the Ceylon Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, that the first part of this compound noun,"Kolamba" itself is a Sinhala word meaning port, ferry, harbour of haven. Colombo Harbour During the nineteenth century Colombo port acquired the sobriquet the"Charing Cross of the East" thanks to its location at the crossroads of Indian Ocean trade.
